In 2018 and 2019, workshops were organized at the University of Puerto Rico Cayey to introduce students to the materials genome initiative, theory-driven materials design, and the challenges with energy storage and conversion. In each year of the grant, undergraduate students from Cayey were recruited to work in DMREF laboratories. In 2018, the workshop was delivered by a Texas A&M graduate student Luis De Jesus. In 2019, the workshop was delivered by Sarbajit Banerjee.
Luis De Jesus and Sarbajit Banerjee received the 2018 Robert S. Hyer Graduate Student and Mentor Awards from the American Physical Society. Luis De Jesus is now an Eberly Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Pennsylvania State University.
