Organic semiconductors are plastic versions of the silicon-based semiconductors commonly used in displays and solar panels. Organic semiconductors have great potential due to their low cost, easy processing, and complete flexibility.  Unfortunately, current organic semiconductors do not yet meet the performance metrics needed for commercial adaptation.  The OSCAR project aims to leap past these performance bottlenecks by creating a substantial database of organic semiconductor structures, to provide data for a machine-learning approach to design high-performance materials.  The team is composed of computational and synthetic chemists, device physicists, and process engineers.  We have to-date shown how processing conditions can alter the nature of intermolecular interactions in thin films to enhance device performance, and have demonstrated our first computationally-designed high-performance organic semiconductor with stability and performance metrics well beyond those needed for commercial use.
